News :: General News : Weekly Digest - 11/05/09 |
Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.
It's starting to get cold here, especially in the mornings (and yes, "cold" is all relative to where you are in the world) - so I'd like to think that last week's news will warm you up a bit. You can make sure you're up to date with news of the StarCraft II beta, or maybe the "future features" promised in Team Fortress 2, or perhaps the sad news that 3D Realms has closed down (no more Duke Nukem Forever!). In happier news, we've also got a review of the Logitech G35 Surround Sound headset, and it looks pretty interesting.

News :: General News : ArmA II dev diary three is now here |
The third in a series of developer diaries and tutorials from the developers of ArmA II has arrived, with the latest instalment focusing on the squad commands and orders, which can be used to control AI team mates in the single player portion of ArmA II.
In the trailer, players are taught how to give commands, and are introduced to the context-sensitive system that gives soldiers certain orders based on the situation at hand.
While those that have been playing the game for a while should know the basics, new players may learn something new by watching the video.

News :: General News : A Night in Fantasia 2009 special guest list update |
A couple of weeks ago, we started getting excited about Eminence's annual symphonic concert celebrating all things orchestral and geeky, A Night in Fantasia. I'm sure plenty of you have your tickets squirreled away already, but for those who need a little bit more convincing - and to inspire further jealousy in we who cannot attend, curse it - Eminence have been kind enough to update the list of notable guests.

News :: General News : Halo celebrated in series of short anime films |
I'm sorry, I really am, but with the San Diego Comic Con apparently the only thing the industry wants to talk about, I'm faced with the task of telling you about yet another piece of tie-in merchandising or hiding under the desk and hoping the boss doesn't notice I'm missing. Besides, I know you want to hear about this one: Halo is spawning its very own series of anime films.

News :: General News : Mass Effect, Singularity join the comics revolution |
Yesterday I took the opportunity to have a bit of a snigger over the transformation of EA's upcoming Dante's Inferno into a comic book, but the fun doesn't stop there. It seems developers and publishers will do almost anything to expose gamers to the printed word, but the two latest franchises to join the flock - Mass Effect and Singularity - both look to be pretty decent material for translation into their chosen formats (comic series and one-shot graphic novel respectively).

Raikkonen set for Formula One sabbatical in 2010 |
Kimi Raikkonen will be missing from the grid in 2010 after failing to agree a deal to drive for McLaren, according to his management. Raikkonen, who has a keen interest in rallying, is expected to pursue other options next year as he looks to secure a winning drive for 2011.
The 2007 world champion agreed to leave Ferrari at the end of this season despite having a year of his contract still to run, to make way for Fernando Alonso. He has always said he would only contemplate staying in the sport with a top team...

The 2009 Season Review - Part Three |
Raikkonen did give Ferrari a win, at Spa, after fending off
Fisichella! On that occasion, however, the Italian was still with Force India, whose Mercedes-powered car showed remarkable form on circuits where low downforce was required. Adrian Sutil proved very fast but wild and accident prone in the other car, but only Raikkonen's KERS prevented Fisichella from staging a huge upset victory in Belgium. Fisi's replacement, the underrated Vitantonio Liuzzi, was headed for a podium finish behind the Brawns at Monza when his car broke a driveshaft...

Raikkonen hoping to race on - with the right team |
It's not often that a recent race winner and world champion ends a season without a confirmed seat for the following year, but that is just the situation that 2009 Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen is facing.
With Fernando Alonso joining the Italian team to partner Felipe Massa in 2010, Raikkonen is still to find a new cockpit in which to ply his trade...
